3 Simple Ways to Calm Your Mind and Body

There are simple ways to calm your mind and body wherever you are, whenever you need it.

Dear Spirited Earthling,

A calm mind and body can bring about numerous benefits that can have a positive impact on your physical and mental well-being. When your mind and body are calm, you are less likely to experience stress and anxiety. This is because you are able to regulate your emotions and respond to situations in a more measured and rational way. A calm mind is better able to focus on the task at hand, which can lead to improved concentration and productivity.

When you are calm, your body is better able to relax, which can lead to improved sleep quality. This, in turn, can lead to improved physical and mental health. A calm mind and body can help you become more self-aware and better able to understand your thoughts, feelings, and actions. This can lead to improved communication and relationships with others.

Knowing simple ways to calm your mind and body are beneficial skills for everyday life. If you’re feeling stressed about a deadline, anxious about a confrontation, or overwhelmed with responsibilities, these 3 simple ways to calm your mind and body can be done wherever you are, whenever you need it.

1.Take 5 Deep Breaths

Breathwork is an ancient practice that involves conscious control of your breathing patterns to improve mental, physical, and emotional well-being. There are many different types of breathwork, but they all generally involve intentional, controlled breathing in specific patterns and rhythms.

The words breath and spirit have the same root word or origin in many languages. The breath regulates your emotions by activating your parasympathetic nervous system. Taking a few moments to breathe can improve your mood, help you fall asleep, and overcome panic attacks.

Breathing exercise: Breathe in for 4 counts, hold, breathe out for 6 – 8 counts, hold. It is important for your exhalation to be longer than your inhalation. Expand your breath from your chest into your abdomen (belly).

2.Go Outside

Nature has long been known to have a calming effect on both the mind and the body. Many people find that spending time in natural environments such as parks, forests, mountains, or beaches can help them feel more relaxed and at ease.

Firstly, being surrounded by natural beauty can help to reduce stress and anxiety levels – calming your mind. The sound of birds chirping, the feel of a gentle breeze, and the sight of trees swaying in the wind can all help to create a sense of peace and mindfulness.

Secondly, spending time in nature can also have physical benefits. For example, taking a walk in the woods can help lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and boost the immune system. Exposure to natural light can also help regulate sleep patterns and improve mood.

Humans thrive when connected to nature at home and with the four elements. During your 10-minute break, go outside and breathe in fresh air. Take a walk during lunch instead of sitting in the cafeteria for the entire break. Maybe walk barefoot, directly connecting with the Earth.  If you work from home, have your coffee break outside or at an open window. Spend time gardening instead of scrolling mindlessly. .

3.Repeat Affirmations and Mantras

Affirmations and mantras are powerful tools that can aid in calming both the mind and body. They are simple yet effective ways to promote positive thinking and peace.

Affirmations are positive statements that you repeat to yourself throughout the day. They help you to focus on your strengths and abilities and can help you to overcome negative thoughts and feelings.

Mantras, on the other hand, are repetitive sounds, words, or phrases that are chanted or repeated during meditation. They can help to quiet the mind and promote relaxation. One popular mantra is "Om," which is believed to be the sound of the universe.

Affirmation ideas to bring calm:

  • I am capable and confident.

  • I believe in my ability to succeed.

  • I inhale peace and exhale fear.

  • I am calm.

  • I focus on what I can control.

These 3 simple ways to calm your mind and body when you’re feeling anxious, stressed, or overwhelmed are easy to implement in everyday life. Additional ideas include journaling through your feelings, cuddling your pet, and working through the feelings with active movement like yoga or running.
