What is a Free Human? And How to Become One

The Free Human Series on YouTube provides insight into a different and more unconventional way of living. It makes you think about what being free means to you.

Dear Spirited Earthling,

There is a YouTube series called Free Human by creator Sorelle Amore that promotes self-directed living. What is self-directed living? It’s living life on your terms. It’s being free. Sorelle talks to creatives and business owners who are living their lives for them, without regard for how society thinks they should live. She describes it as showcasing “people that have broken out of the system and are living unconventional lives because I want to inspire you to live the same.”

The media we engage with has an impact on us. Cut through the distractions, spend less time on heavy content, and rather give some time to this YouTube series.

What Does it Mean to Be a Free Human?

Feeling free is a subjective experience, so everyone’s definition of what it means to feel free will be different. Watching the series can leave you asking yourself, how do I start living my life for myself? And whatever that means to you, is how you can be free.

In essence, feeling free is the sense of being unburdened by constraints or limitations (societal or your own), experiencing a sense of autonomy and self-determination (making decisions for yourself), and having the ability to make choices and act on them without fear or restriction (minimal regard for what others say and think). It could be removing yourself from environments with cultural pressures, oppression and discrimination, or difficult societal norms.

“What’s the point? What’s the point in following what everyone else does? How boring. Be who you wanna be or there's no point in being anyone at all. The only time restrictions in life are the ones we put on ourselves. And if we’re not constantly living every day, and being who we want to be, what is the point?” ~ Julia Wheeler

To Nicholas, being free looks like van life with minimal bills and freedom of movement. To Erika, being free is doing life on your own terms. For her, it’s scheduling meetings around the tides and waves and being within walking distance of the beach. To Léty, being a free human is making decisions without consideration of what others believe or what they expect from you. It is doing things because you want to do them. To Sorelle, it’s being in charge of your own time. To Stef, being free means following your soul path.

You don’t need to adopt van life, nor become a surfer or diver, to be free. It could be living in the cabin in the woods, travelling to a new place every 3 months, or simply living without the desire to keep up with the Joneses.

You need to discover what resonates with you and your interests. This may take time. You may need to remember who you are and rediscover what brings you joy and pleasure. You need to figure out what aligns with you energetically. You need to figure out what your free human life looks like yourself. Figuring this out is exciting. It means you're re-engaging with life and living. It means there is a freer life in your future.

Being a free human is embracing self-empowerment, having autonomy, overcoming limitations, and having agency in your life. It is living life on your terms and connecting with it on a deep level.

“Ironically, most people are seeking a life that demands less money, more connection to nature, more time with their loved ones, more time to create, to do arts. Things that are actually simple, that brings one back to essentialism. And for me, that is always ironic. It’s like, okay so if money was no worry, you’ll do something that demands less money. Well, therefore, money isn’t the issue. The issue is that you're scared.” ~ Erika Drolet

How To Start Living for Yourself

Maybe some of you reading this already know what your free life looks like – start taking actions that will get you there. Some of you may be starting at step 1 – no comparisons, no judgements, go for it and be honest with yourself.

Step 1: Identify your values. By knowing your values, you can align with what you deeply and authentically care about.

  • What is most important to you?

  • What are your core values?

  • What brings you fulfilment?

  • What makes you happy?

Step 2: Set goals that are aligned with your values. Clear goals provide clear focus and motivation, which offer clear direction.

  • What do you want to achieve?

  • What would make you feel fulfilled?

  • What would make you truly happy?

Step 3: Practice saying no to things that aren’t aligned with your values and goals. Say no to things that don’t serve you and your free human life.

Nicholas could be living in a mansion, and living to accumulate more material assets. Instead, he says no to that and yes to simplicity and valuing the world around him.

Step 4: Surround yourself with supportive people.

Your choice to become a free human may be opening the box that people have put you in. In some instances, it may be smashing the box and setting it on fire. Seek out people who share your values and goals, and who will support and encourage you. It can be lonely at first, but you will find your people. Remember, the universe has your back. Always. In Erika’s episode, she said people who move to the island are welcomed as fellow misfits. You will find your place. You will find your people.

Step 5: Take care of yourself. Prioritise your mind (mental), body (physical), and emotional (spirit) health:

  • Get enough sleep

  • Exercise and move your body regularly

  • Eat well and nourishingly

  • Take time for self-reflection

  • Relax

Step 6: Be free.

Act on making your life free. Living your life is a journey. Treat each day as the gift it is. Embrace life. Be patient with yourself. Celebrate your successes along the way.

“Don’t follow me. Don’t follow anyone. Because many people have told me I want to be like you. I want to do like you. You will never be me. And someone asked me, “Ah, but you know, I can’t do this because I'm not like you. I am too shy, I can’t speak like that, I can’t do that. All right, then don’t. Do something else. What is that you want to do?

So, if people want to be free, if they want to have a different life, I think the worst thing to do is believe that there is a recipe that we should follow and be like oh I want to be like this person, I'm going to follow her or him. No, don’t. Please don’t.” ~ Laetitia Clément

Living Differently than People Expect

It is absolutely okay to live differently than people expect. Each person is unique, with their own goals, interests, and talents.

It is ingrained in humans to seek the approval and acceptance of others because living in a tribe meant security and survival. Living differently than people expect may simply mean finding a different tribe.

Living as a free human means embracing your individuality and following your own path, which can bring a sense of authenticity, personal growth, and fulfilment. Living by others’ expectations and values can make you feel resentment, regret, and dissatisfaction. It is your choice.

When you decide to live on your terms, there will likely be questions, challenges, and pushback from others. Remember, it is okay to prioritise your needs and dreams. Your happiness is your responsibility, so make decisions with your well-being in mind.
