Uplifting Life Lessons the Official Disney Princesses Teach Us

Kindness, Compassion, and Empathy Always Matter

Each of the Disney Princesses showed kindness, compassion, and empathy will always matter. Snow White reciprocated the kindness shown to her by the dwarves with her own acts of service for them. Remember, if acts of service weren’t valued, they wouldn’t be one of the 5 love languages. Although her experience getting to the dwarves was traumatic, she never took it out on those around her.

Similarly, Disney Princess Cinderella continued to show kindness and compassion, despite her awful circumstances. She fled from the ball because she had to, not because she wanted to, and apologised to the horse and dog for losing track of time and not leaving before midnight. Her dream came to an end, but she thought of how her actions affected those with her. She also expressed her gratitude to Fairy Godmother for the experience, even though she was sad it ended.

“Thus, as time went by, the chateau fell into disrepair, for the family fortunes were squandered upon the vain and selfish stepsisters, while Cinderella was abused, humiliated, and finally forced to become a servant in her own house. And yet, through it all, Cinderella remained ever gentle and kind, for with each dawn she found new hope that someday, her dreams of happiness would come true.” ~ Narrator, Cinderella

Disney Princess Belle showed kindness to the Beast and castle household objects. After Beast saved her from the wolves, she had the option to leave him injured in the forest and flee home or to take him back to the castle. She brought him to the castle and tended his wounds. When Belle realised Beast could not eat with a spoon, she found a compromise and drank from the bowl, knowing he would be able to do the same. This is a small gesture that has huge meaning.

Jasmine gave food to the hungry child she saw in the market. While not fully understanding the legality of her actions, she showed compassion for those less fortunate than herself and the importance of helping others in need. Princess Jasmine also understood why Aladdin pretended to be something he wasn’t and forgave him.

Disney Princess Pocahontas showed the most understanding of anyone in her story. She believed common ground could be found between the two groups of people. She was willing to build understanding and promote peace and cooperation instead of taking actions based on fear and anger. When John told her the settlers would civilise her people, she understood he was not a bad or narrow-minded man even though his world views were. She opened his mind to other perspectives with kindness.

“You think the only people who are people, are the people who look and think like you. But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger, you'll learn things you never knew you never knew.” ~ Pocahontas

Mulan was struggling with her place in the world and understanding who she was as a person, concerned about the effects her actions had on her family. She selflessly took her father's place in the army to keep him safe. Mulan was also the only soldier to share condolences with Captain Li after he lost his father when they came across the destroyed village. Like Pocahontas, her emotional intelligence added to who she was.

Tiana’s love for food started young when she made gumbo with her father. They made a big pot and she excitedly invited the neighbours to share in the food after he father suggested it. Kindness and compassion start at home. Tiana was initially frustrated with Prince Naveen but became more empathetic when he shared his back story, understanding that everyone has challenges related to their background. She showed the Prince how to chop mushrooms and encouragingly said he could be great instead of deriding his abilities.

“Well, hey, you got the makings of a decent mushroom mincer.” ~ Tiana

Disney Princess Rapunzel was able to speak to the humanity of the people she met along her journey. Her kindness and empathy provided an open space for the ruffians, thugs, and Flynn to share their dreams and personal stories. This kindness and understanding extended to the horse Maximus who let down his walls and befriended her.

In order to lift the curse, Merida and her mother had to mend their relationship by showing kindness, compassion, and empathy towards each other. It is only with these values that positive changes could occur.

Disney Princess Moana showed empathy for Te Fiti and understood what this ecological imbalance meant for her. She was patient and kind with Maui, and encouraged him to be his best self. Moana’s quest was driven by her compassion for her people, her desire to heal the ecological imbalance, and solve the issues affecting her island.

Disney Princess Raya was the first to find a connection with the different tribes by extending kindness to them. Throughout the film, she regretted this and was sure that people could not be trusted. Raya’s journey became one of compassion and empathy. Each person has their own journey and reasons (not excuses) for the behaviours.

“Yeah, well, the world’s broken. You can’t trust anyone.” ~ Raya, Raya and the Last Dragon

“Or maybe it’s broken, because you don’t trust anyone.”  ~ Sisu, Raya and the Last Dragon

These Disney Princess moral lessons are valuable. Kindness, compassion, and empathy should always have a place in our society, and be celebrated and appreciated.

Positivity and Hope Support Resilience and Perseverance

It was positivity and hope that helped the Disney Princesses persevere and strengthen their resilience. The hope for a better future helped Snow White and Cinderella stay positive through their painful experiences. They act on this hope when a path to a better life is shown to them.

"Remember, you’re the one who can fill the world with sunshine." ~ Snow White

Disney Princesses Ariel, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Moana and Raya persevered because they had hope for the future. While they had different dreams and goals and experienced different forms of nay-sayers, challenges and setbacks, there was a deep hope that their dreams would come true, and their goals realised. Raya extended her hope to others, including Namaari who stepped up because of Raya and the team's sacrifices and belief in her.

Disney Princess Mulan saw the Huns climbing out of the snow and rode towards the Emperor. She continually hoped someone would listen to her about the threat of attack. Although no one believed her, she persevered and acted with agency.

"You don’t lose hope, love. If you do, you lose everything.” ~ Mrs. Potts, Beauty and the Beast

The Official Disney Princesses teach us that positivity and hope support resilience and perseverance. Their stories also show that hope will stay just hope unless actions are taken towards making it a reality.

Courage and Strength Overcome Fear

Disney Princesses are repeatedly critiqued for their perceived passivity, particularly early Disney Princesses like Snow White and Cinderella. And yet, they do demonstrate strength – although not always in traditionally ‘masculine’ ways. Kindness, compassion, and empathy are signs of courage in a cruel world. Resilience and perseverance require inner strength. There is great power in the traditionally ‘feminine’ ways to display courage and strength in overcoming circumstances and fears that should not be overlooked.

Snow White was courageous when she escaped into the forest and created a different life for herself. It takes courage and strength to get out of a dangerous situation and start over somewhere unknown. Relatedly, Disney Princess Cinderella found it difficult to ‘simply’ leave a bad situation (which is common with victims of abuse). To go against her abusers and attend the ball took courage and strength. As did coming down to try on the glass slipper and leaving to be with the prince after being locked in her room.

"I'm sure I'll get along somehow. Everything's going to be alright.". ~ Snow White

“After all, I'm still a member of the family. And it says, 'By royal command, every eligible maiden is to attend.” ~ Cinderella

Disney Princess Belle showed courage when she gave up her freedom to save her father. Although not recommended on this scale, making sacrifices for loved ones takes strength. She courageously went to the castle where the angry mob was attacking (acting against the crowd and not following mob mentality) and saved Beast from falling.

Like Belle set boundaries with Beast about not accepting him lose his temper, Disney Princess Jasmine continually stood up for herself, stood against the unequal laws of her kingdom, and refused to be confined by tradition. Her voice was not considered important because she was a woman, but she continued to speak out. This life lesson teaches us to have the courage to challenge injustice and pursue what is fair and right.

"How dare you! All of you! Standing around deciding my future?! I am not a prize to be won!" ~ Jasmine, Aladdin

Pocahontas demonstrated courage by meeting with John and planning on introducing him to her father. It took courage to try to bridge the divide between her Native American community and the English settlers. Disney Princess Pocahontas also threw herself protectively over him when he was about to be executed and again bravely stated her case for peace, challenging her father to change his.

“This is the path I choose, father. What will yours be?” ~ Pocahontas

Rapunzel hesitated before leaving the tower, and again before touching the ground. By leaving her tower, she stepped out of her known world and into the unknown. She had conflicting feelings about leaving as she explored her freedom. This portrayal of mixed feelings teaches us that courage doesn’t always have to look strong and undoubting. Sometimes, you may question yourself and your actions and still courageously walk towards a better future. Her courage teaches us that confronting our fears can lead to personal growth and new opportunities. Once she realised who Gothel was and what she did, she refused to let Gothel use her magic hair again. When Gothel told Rapunzel to stop fighting, she said she would fight Gothel every day. She stood up to her abuser and vowed to always do so.

“For every minute of the rest of my life, I will fight. I will never stop trying to get away from you!” ~ Rapunzel, Tangled

Disney Princess Tiana had a dream that she worked incredibly hard to achieve. When the Shadow Man showed her that her dream was possible if she worked with The Other Side, she declined his offer and said no to receiving everything she worked and dreamed for. This life lesson teaches us that it takes courage to do things the right way.

“My daddy never did get what he wanted. But he had what he needed. He had love! He never lost sight of what was really important. And neither will I!” ~ Tiana, Princess and the Frog

Mulan, Merida, Moana, and Raya showed strength and courage by going to war or on dangerous quests. While this showed typically masculine traits, their femininity was still embraced in different ways. Disney Princess Mulan did not have the strength of the men in the army to climb the post and retrieve the arrow, so she used her smarts and achieved the goal by playing to her strengths. Without a doubt, it was courageous of her to go to war in place of her father. For it takes courage to face your enemies and an inner strength to keep fighting after seeing the destruction of villages and fellow soldiers. It took courage to go back to people who left her behind and to help them. She questions her Captain on his lack of trust for her as a woman. Like Rapunzel, Mulan stepped out of her comfort zone to face challenges head-on

“You said you trust Ping. Why is Mulan any different?” ~ Mulan

Disney Princess Merida showed courage throughout her story. She showed physical strength and courage when climbing cliffs to drink from waterfalls. It took courage to fight tradition and interpret laws in a way for her to contend for her own hand. Merida protected her mother from her father and fellow warriors at the end of the film. In less obvious ways, she showed courage and strength when she dared to pursue her own path and write her own story, to stand in front of a room of fighting clans and publicly speak, to admit her mistakes and to apologise.

“I’ve been selfish. I tore a great rift in this kingdom. There’s no one to blame but me. And I know now that I need to amend my mistake, and mend our bond.” ~ Merida

Disney Princess Moana's journey is one of courage and fearlessness in the face of danger and adversity. She set sail for the first time and faced the vast ocean where she encountered Kakamora and Tamatoa. With courage and resourcefulness, she navigated these dangers and continued on her way. With bravery and resilience, Moana navigated the Realm of Monsters and confronted Te Ka. Like Mulan, all this was done while she was in the process of accepting her true identity and in Moana’s case embracing being a Wayfinder.

Raya grew up as a warrior and protector, who later courageously set out into the dystopian landscape in search of the last dragon. She travelled to each land to steal and collect the pieces of the Dragon Gem, risking her life each time. It also took bravery to be the first to make a stand and be an example for others. It took courage and strength to change long-held beliefs, accept help and place trust in someone else.

“Then let me take the first step.” – Raya, Raya and the Last Dragon

Though not always obvious, the Disney Princesses are courageous and strong in a myriad of ways. This life lesson from the Disney Princesses teaches us that sometimes someone is born courageous, and someone else can learn to become it.

Independence and Freedom of Choice are Important

Disney Princesses Jasmine, Pocahontas and Merida fought for their independence outside of their roles as daughters of the Sultan, Chief, or King They wanted control over their own lives, to have the freedom to make their own choices and be allowed to follow their own paths.

“I’m the princess. I’m the example. I’ve got duties, responsibilities, expectations. My whole life is planned out.” ~ Merida

While Ariel was happy to have her independence and follow her dream, Disney Princess Rapunzel showed conflicting emotions around her new-found freedom and independence. As touched on previously, she showed that it’s okay to be excited about where you’re going and concerned about what and who you left behind. Ultimately, Rapunzel’s desire for independence wins over her concerns of how her ‘mother’ would feel or react.

“Step outside of your comfort zone, for that’s where life truly begins” – Rapunzel

The journeys of Disney Princesses Rapunzel and Mulan showed that you don’t know what you have in you until you have no option but to embrace the choices you made. They realised they were stronger, braver, and smarter than people (and maybe they themselves) believed them to be.

all hands in teamwork

There is Value in Teamwork and Loyalty

In each of the Official Disney Princess tales, they are helped along her journey by friends and family. The seven dwarves helped Disney Princess Snow White by taking her in and pursuing the Evil Queen to her death. They placed her in a glass coffin and kept watch over her. The dwarves worked together in the mines, fulfilling different jobs. Snow White cleaned the cottage with the help of her forest friends.

So beautiful, even in death, that the dwarfs could not find it in their hearts to bury her. They fashioned a coffin of glass and gold, and kept eternal vigil at her side.” ~ Narrator, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Disney Princess Cinderella had many animal friends who helped her prepare for each new day and the royal ball. She attended the ball because Fairy Godmother and her animal friends helped. It was the teamwork and loyalty of the animals that helped get her out of her locked room.

Like other Disney Princesses, Aurora had animal friends. This is a simple reminder that friends can be found in unexpected places and forms. The Three Good Fairies were loyal to the crown and protected Aurora from Maleficent’s curse for years. It was also only with their help that Prince Phillip defeated Maleficent and broke the curse.

"Arm thyself with this enchanted shield of virtue, and this mighty sword of truth. For these weapons of righteousness will triumph over evil." ~ Flora, Sleeping Beauty

Disney Princess Ariel decided to become human through dangerous means. Although her friends did not agree with her choice, they continued to support her and help her in any way they could. This teaches us that we won’t agree with every decision our friends make, but that doesn't mean the friendship has to end.

The enchanted household objects comforted Belle and tried to make her stay in the castle as pleasant as possible. They also advised Beast on how to behave better and be kind to Belle. As a team, they helped bring Belle and Beast together.

“Ma chère mademoiselle. It is with deepest pride and greatest pleasure that we welcome you tonight. And now, we invite to relax, let us pull up a chair, as the dining room proudly presents your dinner.” ~ Lumiere

Rajah did not want Princess Jasmine to leave the Palace but gave her a head up so she could climb the wall because he understood she needed to go. Aladdin and Abu worked as a team throughout the film, with friendship later extended to Genie. It took teamwork to save Jasmine.

Pocahontas received guidance and support from Grandmother Willow. Like Flounder and Sebastian, Meeko and Flit stayed with Pocahontas even when they didn’t agree with her choices. Flit acted as her protector. The same can be said for Nakoma who took actions that she thought were best for her friend. In the end, the bridge between the two worlds would require mutual respect from both sides and collaborative teamwork.

Mulan’s grandmother calls on the ancestors to protect Mulan. Mushu, Khan, and lucky Cri-Kee helped Mulan on her quest. Naturally, being a part of an army shows the importance of teamwork and comradery. Yao, Ling, and Chien Po trusted Mulan and dressed as concubines to infiltrate the Palace. General Li also joined them and tried to defend to the Emperor.

“Ancestors, hear our prayer. Watch over Mulan.” ~ Grandmother Fa

Disney Princess Tiana had a long-standing friendship with Charlotte, who later took a step away from her dream of becoming a princess to help Tiana have her happily ever after. Louis and Ray helped Tiana and Prince Naveen navigate the bayou to find Mama Odie. As a team, they were able to get back to the mansion and ultimately helped bring Tiana’s dream to reality.

Rapunzel was able to live her dream of seeing the floating lights because Flynn was her guide. It was the ruffians, thugs, and Maximus who helped Flynn escape so that he and Maximus could rush to save Rapunzel.

Princess Merida and her relationship with her mother were central to her story. It was only when she understood her mother and valued her support (and vice versa) that their relationship healed. She accepted help from her brothers and trusted the wisps to show her the way.

Disney Princess Moana had the support of her grandmother, who shared lessons from the ancestors that highlighted loyalty to heritage and values. With this in mind, Moana set out on her quest with hope and courage. She worked with Maui and the ocean to help Te Fiti and restore balance.

"I've got your back, chosen one. Go save the world." ~ Maui

Like Rapunzel and Pascal, Raya and TukTuk had a friendship from childhood. As they travelled the land with Sisu, their group grew and they worked together to save the world. While Disney Princess Raya thought doing it alone was easier and better, she knew they would only succeed together. Her team also showed her what working together achieved when she was blinded by rage. The dragons and Raya’s team worked together to defeat the Druun. On a larger scale, life in the different lands was so much better when unified than when divided.

Power of True Love

It was true loves kiss that woke both Snow White and Aurora from their sleep spell. Belle declared her love for Beast and that was enough to transform him to a human again. Like Belle, Rapunzel did not kiss her ‘prince’ to heal or save him. Rapunzel shed genuine tears and these were what saved Flynn’s life. Whether by kiss, declaration, or unsaid feelings these Disney stories teaches us that true love is powerful.

Disney Princesses Cinderella, Jasmine, Rapunzel and Tiana all married men with different social statuses than themselves. Some married ‘up’ and some married ‘down’. These love stories prove that love can transcend social status or external circumstances. It is also a reminder not to judge people based on their backgrounds.

“I’m not sure I want to be a prince anymore, cause then we would have to go our separate ways. I don’t want that, I want to stay close to you, no matter what. Because… I love you.” ~ Prince Naveen, Princess and the Frog

The power of true love in non-romantic ways is also shown in many of the Official Disney Princess movies. Aurora’s parents allowed the Three Good Fairies to take her away and raise her for 16 years, in hopes she would stay safe. The fairies looked after her and gave up magic for all that time so that they would not attract attention.

King Triton took Ariel’s place in the contract with Ursula. He later gifted Ariel legs so that she could be with her true love. He loved Ariel and wanted her to be happy, even if that meant she wouldn’t be where he was.

Jasmine’s father and Merida’s mother changed the laws to allow the Princesses to marry whomever they choose. Chief Powhatan did not execute John as was customary and instead chose to follow the path of understanding because he saw the lesson Pocahontas was teaching him. Mulan was offered a position on the Emperors Council, despite being a woman.

When Mulan returned from war, she immediately knelt before her father and offered the sword of Shan Yu and the crest of the Emperor as gifts to bring honour to the family. She expected to be reprimanded but her father was happier to have her home and having her as a daughter than the honour gifts.

"The greatest gift and honor is having you for a daughter.” ~ Fa Zhou, Mulan

Tiana shared her father’s dream. It was her mother who reminded her that love and family were more important to her father than having a restaurant. It is this reminder that helped Tiana say no to the Shadow Man. Prince Naveen was willing to put his happiness second to help Tiana open her restaurant. Charlotte found happiness in helping Tiana have her happily ever after and live the dream of being a princess that she herself had since childhood.

“All my life, I read about true love and fairytales, and… Tia, you found it! I’ll kiss him! For you, honey! No marriage required.” ~ Charlotte, The Princess and the Frog

Rapunzel was kidnapped as a baby and her parents did not know where she was. Regardless, they celebrated Rapunzel's birthday by releasing floating lanterns to the sky. It was a show of love and a symbol of never-ending hope that the lanterns would guide their daughter home. Like Aurora’s parents, their love never lessened over the years of missing her. These Disney stories teach us that the love from family and friends is extraordinarily deep and life-changing.

Moana and Raya’s love for their home and people guided them on their adventures. The love of heritage and her people also prompted Pocahantas to stay and not travel with John to England. These Disney princesses teach us that a profound love for where you come from and taking care of those in your charge are also powerful.

The Official Disney Princess movies show the power of true love, in whatever form it takes - from romantic love to parental love, to friendship, to heritage and community love.

magic book fairytale

The Power of Dreams and Wishes

Disney Princesses Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora dream of happiness and being with their true love.

"They can't order me to stop dreaming." ~ Cinderella

While Disney Princesses Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Rapunzel and Merida wish for changes to their current situations. They dream of something more for their life, like new surroundings and more independence.

Then Disney Princesses Pocahontas, Mulan, Moana, and Raya dream of a better life for their people. Whether it is an end to war or safer and more prosperous living, their dreams and wishes hold external motivations.

Disney Princess Tiana had a clear goal that she actively worked towards. She wished for a star but also knew that hard work and dedication were needed. Tiana’s story reminds us that working on one goal can open you up to a different and unexpected one.

“Yes, you wish and you dream with all your little heart. But you remember, Tiana, that old star can only take you part of the way. You got to help him with some hard work of your own. And then… yeah, you can do anything you set your mind to. Just promise your Daddy one thing? That you’ll never, ever lose sight of what is really important. OK?” ~ James, Tiana’s Father, The Princess and the Frog

There is power in dreams and wishes. Happiness is an important ingredient in life. Sharing your life with someone who loves and supports is invaluable. Wanting something different for yourself is okay and forging your own path is admirable. Supporting your community and protecting your people is honourable. This uplifting life lesson from Disney Princesses is that deep belief in dreams and wishes can positively change and transform your life.

Magic is Real

A common theme in Disney movies is the power and presence of magic. The concept of magic in Disney films goes beyond traditional sorcery and includes the magical elements found in love, friendship, dreams, and the unexpected outcomes of extraordinary events.

There are examples of good magic in Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother, Aurora’s Three Good Fairies, Pocahontas’ Grandmother Willow, Mulan’s Ancestors, the Golden Flower in Rapunzel, Tiana’s Mama Odie, Moana’s Te Fiti and Ocean, and Raya’s dragons and Dragon Gem. There are examples of dangerous magic in Snow White’s Evil Queen, Aurora’s Maleficent, Beast’s curse, Ariel’s Ursula, Rapunzel’s Gothel, Tiana’s Shadow Man, and Raya’s Druun. Aladdin’s Genie is an example of how magic can be used for good and evil.

“All around you are spirits, child. They live in the earth, the water, the sky. If you listen, they will guide you.” ~ Grandmother Willow, Pocahontas

There are often contingencies when dealing with magic. Cinderella had to leave before midnight and Ariel had three days to make the spell permanent. There is also no guarantee magic will go according to plan, like in Merida’s case.

There is magic in true love and following dreams. Life can change in the best ways with this magic in life. Cinderella connects with Fairy Godmother because she believes in her dream. Raya believes in the sacrifices of the dragons and the magic of the Dragon Gem. This life lesson from Disney Princesses is that magic is real when you believe it is and can be found all around you.

Be True to Yourself

In many ways, the thought thread present in the Disney Princess stories is being true to yourself. Snow White and Cinderella's inner gentle natures were not tainted by their traumatic experiences and demeaning, undermining family members.

Disney Princess Ariel was curious and adventurous and wasn’t prepared to change to fit in with external expectations. Her curiosity led her to explore shipwrecks and the surface and create a cave of curiosities. Similarly, Disney Princess Belle never changed herself to fit into her small provincial town. She continued reading and declined Gaston’s marriage proposal. Marrying Gaston could have helped her integrate into the community. Instead, she chose her values and integrity. Disney Princess Tiana never made her dream smaller because of external voices who said it would never happen for a woman of her background.

"If you do your best each and every day, good things are sure to come your way." ~ Tiana, The Princess and the Frog

Pocahontas stayed true to what she knew of the world and asked John to broaden his perspectives instead of feeling less than because of his limited views. She also knew that her path was different to what her father saw for her. Jasmine and Merida also saw different paths for themselves than their parents did.

“I am Merida, first-born descendant of Clan DunBroch, and I’ll be shooting for my own hand.” ~ Merida, Brave

"Some say fate is beyond our command, but I know better. Our destiny is within us. You just have to be brave enough to see it." ~ Merida, Brave

Like Ariel, Disney Princesses Merida and Moana were curious adventurers. Merida climbed mountains and became proficient with the bow. Moana sailed out and followed what she believed to be true about the world. By stepping away from societal norms and staying true to themselves, they stepped into bright and fulfilling futures.

Disney Princess Mulan had an identity crisis, where she felt her reflection did not show who she was inside. She couldn’t be the perfect daughter and wife, nor hold her tongue because she was a woman. Her journey is also one of self-discovery. Mulan stayed true to herself and followed her own path, which brought honour and love into her life.

"Maybe I didn't go for my father. Maybe what I really wanted was to prove I could do things right, so when I looked in the mirror, I'd see someone worthwhile. But I was wrong. I see nothing." ~ Mulan

"I've heard a great deal about you, Fa Mulan. You stole your father's armor, ran away from home, impersonated a soldier, deceived your commanding officer, dishonored the Chinese Army, destroyed my palace … and you have saved us all." ~ Emperor of China, Mulan
